Vernon C. Schakel, general contractor, started the business because when he needed to buy
bolts and nuts he would drive a long distance and then the product would not be available. He
knew there was a need for a fastener business in his community. Vernon consulted with many
individuals and businessmen in the construction industry and they too expressed a need to
establish a full line fastener store. So in 1976, Bolts & Nuts of Hancock County was established.
Vernon recruited his wife, Jo Anne, and their daughter, Sharon to help with the store. Bolts & Nuts
became well known for stocking a wide selection of fasteners and in 1991 Vernon and Jo Anne
incorporated the business. The Schakel family has earned the respect of the community by
serving their customers with dignity and integrity which has built relationships that goes beyond
business.
Bolts & Nuts sells primarily to industrial, agricultural and commercial customers such as:
corporations, small businesses, universities, cities and towns, military, contractors, mechanics,
plumbers, electricians, garages, handyman services and more......individual customers are
welcome too.
Vernon and Jo Anne decided to take a well deserved break and retired in 2003. But, they didn't go
far...the Schakel Farm is just across the road from the Bolts & Nuts store. Sharon...with 30 years
of experience...has taken over the operations of the company and is the current CEO. Sharon is a
1987 graduate of Indiana University with a BA degree in Arts & Sciences. She has been a
volunteer on the Buck Creek Township Fire Department for more than 26 years, an EMT and
holds the position of Assistant Fire Chief.
